VIBES: Disgust

Vibes: How to experience (an emotionally healthy) life with Jesus

Disgust

Proverbs 6:16-19

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:

haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,

hands that shed innocent blood,

a heart that devises wicked schemes,

feet that are quick to rush into evil,

a false witness who pours out lies

and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Frame It

Why do I feel this way?

2 Samuel 11:27

After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.

2 Samuel 12:9a

Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes?

Where should I direct it?

Psalm 51:1-17

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;

so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

God, I am disgusted with sin. Sin in me. Sin in the world.

I am disgusted with the devil’s schemes, and my deceitful heart.

But, I am grateful that you have mercy on me because Your love is unfailing.

I am grateful that you have not given up on me in my brokenness.

I am grateful that you have not banished me from your presence.

I am grateful that you cleanse me, purify me, restore me, and renew me.

Although I have been disgusted with myself, you did not consider me irredeemable.

Although I have been disgusted with others, you give me strength to forgive.

Although I have been disgusted with the world, you showed me how to love.

Thank you, God, that you did not consider me beneath your consideration!

Thank you, God, that you did not count me out as worthless!

Thank you, God, that you do not pile on disgust, but deliver me from it!

What does the gospel say to it?

Hebrews 12:2

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
